Swing check valves like the L278-CS provide automatic non-return service for pipelines where backflow must be prevented — pump discharge lines, boiler feedwater systems, condensate return lines, and any application where reverse flow could damage equipment, contaminate process media, or drain elevated tanks. The swing-disc design relies on forward flow pressure to lift the disc clear during normal operation and on gravity (combined with reverse flow when present) to seat the disc and stop backflow.
The flanged-end Class 150 construction conforms to ANSI B16.5 face-to-face dimensions, providing direct replacement compatibility with most existing systems. WCB cast steel body construction with 13Cr stainless trim handles standard industrial process media at moderate pressures. The bolted-cover design allows the disc, hinge mechanism, and seat to be serviced in-line without removing the valve body from the pipeline. Working pressure is approximately 285 psi at 100°F per ANSI B16.34, derating with rising temperature. API 600 design conformance and API 598 pressure-testing standards ensure dimensional and quality consistency suitable for power plant, refinery, and chemical-plant applications.
